Devo &mdash Uncontrollable Urge &mdash France, 1978
You've probably heard of Devo, or at least of their hats, and either didn't think about them or dismissed them as some eighties, nerd-chic fad. Prepare to have your expectations unmet, as in all other areas of life.
Boredoms &mdash New York City, Date Unknown
The best band in the universe puts on a performance of total anarchy, making simultaneously the shittiest and awesomest music you will ever see in your entire life.
Ella Fitzgerald &mdash Misty &mdash 1965
"Misty" is, perhaps, Ella Fitzgerald's most famous song &mdash and no wonder. As evinced from this video, Fitzgerald was a preemeninent song stylist, both in her bubbly sweet voice and the sensibility she brought to bear with even the most hackneyed material. In English: She's good.
Otis Redding &mdash Try A Little Tenderness &mdash European Tour 1967
What's the difference between soul and sentimentality? While it's not easy to quantify, there are plenty examples of each. In his short career, Otis Redding proved himself masterful in the former. Conor Oberst? Let's just say the jury's out.
Cat Power &mdash I Don't Blame You &mdash Jools Holland, Date Unknown
Chan Marshall, alias Cat Power, croons one of her haunting original compositions on UK television, uncensored. Great for a rainy or melancholy evening.
Bob Dylan &mdash Like A Rolling Stone &mdash Newcastle, England, 1966
Just after going electric, Bob Dylan toured with his band (which later became "The Band") throughout Europe in a methamphetamine-fueled tour later chronicled in "Eat the Document." Linked above is an excerpt from that tour, a blistering performance of "Like A Rolling Stone" from when Dylan was a wee 25 years old. This footage was later featured in Martin Scorcese's Dylan biopic "No Direction Home."
