Jonathan Lethem's essay, The Ecstasy of Influence, contains not a single orignal word. Each sentence was sourced from another text. The essay, appropriately enough, deals with the concept of authorship and, by extension, ownership: when can we say we authored a text, even if it is substantially similar to another text, and when are we stealing? Really, is there such a thing?

The internet, for all its baubles and charms, gives us giddy, effervescent access to instant art, through generators, translators and all manner of flash animations. The low barriers to entry and absence of censorship make particularly fertile ground for self-expression, and in our world, that's something greatly needed.

With this in mind, I've started a collation of "Artful Nonsense." Make your own. The rules are simple but inflexible; anyone who follows these has done better than, oh, the average literary critic.

The author of Artful Nonsense takes a string of data (or text), inputs them into an algorithmic computation and copies the output, without change. If the output is unsatisfactory, the process is repeated.
The data (or text) must not be written by the author.
All algorithms used, and all textual sources, must be attributed at the beginning.

With that in mind, here is the first, exemplary Artful Nonsense, courtesy of the Bonsai Story Generator, taking sources from The Scandal of Scientology, some spam e-mails, wikipedia articles on solenoids and transistors, and the online journal of a teenager in Manhattan. I've split them up with titles, to make it more readable, though you can call them whatever you want.
