Funkin' Wagnall's Music Round-Up

Every issue, we will feature mp3s from some of our favorite bands &mdash with their permission, of course. This month, we have music from a Finnish indie-pop group, a seven-piece outfit from Olympia, Washington, and an all-guy band in Boston, Massachusetts. This issue, we're a bit on the indie tip, but we welcome all types of music at all times of the year.

Hey you! Start your own band! Do you want us to hear your musical output? Send a link to an mp3 at: submit@zotapine.com.

Red Carpet

Red Carpet is made up of Petri Nakari, Velli Kaupinen, Samuli Toivonen and Olli Moilanen, the drummer. Based in Helsinki, Finland, these four men write and perform songs in English. They have released a 7" and two albums since 2003. Their influences include R.E.M., Teenage Fanclub and Yello. Their biography is particularly matter-of-fact, though they state this about their new album: "If you go buy The Noise of Red Carpet, you will make several people happy, including yourself."

...And People And Crocodiles...

...and people and crocodiles... is Eli CP on guitar, Parker Barnes on upright bass, and Beau Sievers on drums. They've been playing music together since 2002--first very quietly, then perhaps a bit louder, next in Cambodia with The Khmer Fusion Project, in Boston shortly thereafter, and now quite loud indeed.

Their first album, Indoors, will be independently released in November of this year.

The Pasties

According to their bio, The Pasties are "an orchestral army headquartered in Olympia, Washington. The lineup includes seven members: Joe on guitar/vocals, Kendl on banjo/guitar/vocals, Erin on drums, Alex on bass, Guire on accordion, T-Claw on fiddle and Danny on trumpet." Our student editor saw The Pasties play outside of the Berkeley BART station in the summer of 2006. On their sound, she says, "They're very enthustiastic, which makes watching them very enjoyable. Sound-wise, I would compare them to the Aislers Set or Talulah Gosh, only they are more forceful about their silliness, a la Apples in Stereo."

For those of you old enough to tie your own shoes, this means she liked them. We, erm, think.
